El sujetoThe subject
Ponerse en el centro del mundo y, aun así, abrirse al otroPlacing oneself at the center of the world and still opening to the other
To be a subject is to occupy the center of one's own world, but the other was already there in that center, waiting for us to let it in.
De dónde viene: del egocentrismo viviente a la intersubjetividadWhere it comes from: from living egocentrism to intersubjectivity
Por eso da al sujeto una definición primera bio-lógica, retomada de El Método 2, y la enriquece con Hegel, Freud y Ricoeur (pp. 83, 87, 89).Morin starts from an observation: a great Western philosophical tradition was founded on the subject without being able to anchor it in life, while deterministic science, positivism and structuralism dissolved or expelled it (p. 81). So he gives the subject a primary bio-logical definition, taken from Method 2, and enriches it with Hegel, Freud and Ricoeur (pp. 83, 87, 89).
In a note he admits he must correct the chapter on the subject in Method 3, which did not stress intersubjectivity enough (p. 85). To do so he turns to attachment studies by Siegel, Montagner and Cyrulnik, to Jean-Louis Vullierme's specularity (p. 85) and to the need for recognition in Rousseau, Hegel and Todorov (p. 86), between Descartes and Husserl on one side and Levinas on the other.
Exclusión: nadie más en mi lugarExclusion: no one else in my place
Occupying the center of one's own world implies a principle of exclusion. Two identical twins may share everything except the I. What makes each unique is not a genetic or psychological trait but the quality of being a subject. That is why the I persists although cells are renewed and although child, adult and old person barely resemble one another.
Inclusión: el Nosotros y el TúInclusion: the We and the You
The same center allows us to include ourselves in a We, couple, family, party, Church, and to include that We in our world. Morin speaks of a double logical device, for oneself and for others, which is really fourfold: I, You, family We, social We. Its instances are complementary and antagonistic; hence egocentrism produces selfishness and also altruism.
Sujeto y sujetadoSubject and subjected
Being a subject secures autonomy, but the subject can be subjected. Not from outside, like a prisoner, but from within: a stronger power, the State, the Fatherland, a God, a Leader or an Idea, settles in the center of the device and gives orders while we believe we serve it of our own free will.
A point places itself at the center of its world and, without leaving it, opens toward another point: exclusion and inclusion are born together.
Facing someone we do not know, we hesitate between sympathy and fear, unsure whether they will be friend or enemy. To pacify the relation we exchange gestures of courtesy, yet remain ready to flee, defend or attack. Morin sees there the subject in its pure state: open and closed by nature, alike and strange at once.
Biológico · la bacteria y el pollueloBiological · the bacterium and the chick
The principle of inclusion is original, like the chick that leaves the egg and follows its mother. Morin takes the bacterium as a metaphor: it divides in two, each becoming mother, sister and daughter of the other, and it exchanges strands of DNA with other bacteria in an immense We.
Social · El ángel azulSocial · The Blue Angel
Subjection is not only political. Morin illustrates it with Professor Unrath, who in the film The Blue Angel is subjected by his love for Lola-Lola, and with those who let themselves be possessed by a God, a Myth or an Idea that, installed like a virus at the subject's center, gives imperious orders.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es egoísmoIt is not selfishness
Egocentrism, for Morin, literally means occupying the center of one's own world, not despising others. From that center one may sacrifice everything to oneself, up to Cain's murder, or sacrifice oneself for the other, up to giving one's life for a friend. Being a subject carries both possibilities.
No es un nudo de relacionesIt is not a knot of relations
Intersubjectivity is the subject's medium of existence, without which it perishes. But the subject does not dissolve into it: the I is not a relay. It keeps an irreducible self-affirmation and an incommunicable core; pain and joy can be shared, but not transferred.
No es lo contrario de la objetividadIt is not the opposite of objectivity
The subject can objectify itself, the Je that sees itself as Moi, and so it can treat its subjective problem like an illness. Morin sums it up in a paradox: objectivity can only come from a subject, something Niels Bohr had already noticed in physics.
That is to say, the relation to the other is original. The other is virtual in each of us and must be actualized for each of us to become oneself.Edgar Morin · El Método 5, p. 86Edgar Morin · Method 5, p. 86 (free translation)
Morin has just drawn on newborn attachment, Vullierme's specularity and the archaic theme of the double to show that the other is not added later to an already formed self. He concludes thus before turning to understanding, recognition and solitude.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin writes that Sartre's formula, hell is other people, holds mostly for the Parisian intellectual milieu, and prefers Hugo: hell lies in solitude. The irony unsettles a tradition that saw in the other's gaze above all a threat, and forces us to ask how much of our independence is really a lack of recognition.
If the subject can be possessed from within by an Idea that gives orders while we believe we obey freely, how can we tell when we act on our own? Morin offers no sure criterion. He leaves open the uncomfortable possibility that our most intimate convictions are, at times, the voice of a power that has subjected us.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Developmental psychology and the neuroscience of attachment, which Morin cites, have kept showing that the newborn seeks the bond from the start and that lack of recognition wounds. These ideas underpin today's parenting practices, early intervention and care for isolated people, and debates on loneliness as a public health problem.
Social media place each user at the center of their own feed and, at the same time, make them depend on others' gaze, on recognition measured in reactions. It is a technical amplification of Morin's double device: self-affirmation and need for the other, egocentrism and the search for a We, sometimes subjected by the group.
¿Quién estaba ya dentro de ti antes de que pudieras decir yo?Who was already inside you before you could say I?
In which We do you include your I most easily, and in which is it hard?
When did you sacrifice something of yours for another without a second thought?
What idea, cause or person has come to give orders from your center?
Whom have you treated only as an object, forgetting they are also a subject?
What part of you remains incommunicable, even to those who love you most?
