You are not just an individual: society and the species live inside you, and you produce them while they produce you.

De dónde viene: de la onda de Bohr al cerebro triúnicoWhere it comes from: from Bohr's wave to the triune brain

He extends the idea to the individual-society relation and draws on Freud, with the dialogic between Superego, instinctual Id and Ego, to show the individual at the knot of the biological and the social (pp. 58–59).

Se apoya en Humberto Maturana, Antonio Damasio y Jean-Didier Vincent para unir inteligencia y afectividad (p. 61), y remite a El paradigma perdido para la soldadura entre biología y antropología (p. 62).For the mental trinity he takes Paul MacLean's triune brain: the reptilian paleocephalon, the old-mammal mesocephalon and the neocortex (pp. 60–61). He relies on Humberto Maturana, Antonio Damasio and Jean-Didier Vincent to join intelligence and affectivity (p. 61), and refers to The Lost Paradigm for the weld between biology and anthropology (p. 62).

The human does not emerge from a single trinity, but from several fitted together: individual-society-species, brain-culture-mind and reason-affectivity-drive. The last expresses the triune nature of the brain, which keeps reptilian and mammalian legacies. None of the three can be thought in isolation: each interferes with the others, and together they form the basis of human complexity.

Medios y fines a la vezMeans and ends at once

Society lives for the individual, who lives for society, and both live for the species, which lives for them. Each term is means and end of the others. But the individual's purposes do not end there: happiness, love, knowledge, contemplation or adventure have developed throughout history as ends of their own.

Complementarios y antagonistasComplementary and antagonistic

The relation is a loop, but also a dialogic: what is complementary can become antagonistic. Society represses the individual, who longs to break free; the species pushes him to reproduce, and he can take pleasure without doing so or sacrifice his offspring to his selfishness. Between the ephemeral individual and the permanent species a gap of death opens.

Cotidiano · el duelo que enfermaEveryday · grief that makes you ill

Sadness or grief can weaken immune defences, and hysterical conversion fixes an ailment of the soul in a bodily organ. For Morin every illness has three entrances: the somatic, treated by doctors; the psychic, once treated by shamans and confessors and today by psychotherapists; and the social, which a politics of civilization ought to address.

Biológico · pulsión, corazón y razónBiological · drive, heart and reason

MacLean distinguishes in the brain a reptilian legacy of aggression and drives, a mammalian legacy where affectivity and memory meet, and a neocortex that is the seat of abstraction. They do not rule in fixed turns: reason seldom governs, and sometimes murderous drive uses technical rationality for its own ends.

Social · la familia, placenta culturalSocial · the family, a cultural placenta

Archaic society is organized around kinship, that is, around rules on sexuality, and its first social strata are bioclasses: men and women, children, adults and the old. In historical societies the family is at once a biological reproducer, a cultural placenta and the basic sociological unit. Species, culture and society in a single institution.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
Each of these terms contains the others. Not only are individuals in the species, the species is in individuals; not only are individuals in society, society is inside individuals, imprinting its culture on them from birth.
Edgar Morin · El Método 5, p. 58Edgar Morin · Method 5, p. 58 (free translation)

Morin has just proposed that the human is defined first as the individual-society-species trinity. Before describing how they produce one another, he clarifies their relation: it is not simple inclusion, like boxes within boxes, but mutual containment, in the manner of the hologram, where each part carries the whole.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

The trinity disarms the two great political simplifications: the one that sees only free individuals and the one that sees only social structures. Both are, in Morin's terms, gazes that expel a reality. Accepting the trinity forces you to admit that your freedom is made of society and species, and that society is made of individuals who can rebel.

Morin observes that reason is only very exceptionally in command. It is an uncomfortable idea for anyone who trusts in deciding with a cool head. Drive and affectivity are not noise reason must eliminate, but instances it lives with in conflict; and most disturbing of all, they can enlist reason for their own ends.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Affective neuroscience, since the work of Damasio that Morin cites, has consolidated the idea that emotion and reasoning cannot be separated: deciding without emotions leads to deciding worse. MacLean's triune brain model, by contrast, has been widely disputed by neuroscientists, though Morin's insight about the unstable combination remains useful.

Medicine today speaks of a biopsychosocial approach and studies how stress, poverty or isolation affect the body. It is Morin's insight about the three entrances. What is still missing is the third path he proposed: a politics of civilization that addresses the social and ecological causes of illness.
