We are puppets of genes, culture and ideas, and yet sometimes we cut a string: we possess what possesses us.
De dónde viene: de Heráclito a la máquina no trivialWhere it comes from: from Heraclitus to the non-trivial machine
The chapter opens with a chorus of epigraphs: Heraclitus, Pascal, Büchner, Jung, Victor Hugo and Shakespeare (p. 295). Against the determinism of classical science, Morin recalls that autonomy could be defined physically thanks to Norbert Wiener's cybernetics and Heinz von Foerster's self-organizing systems (p. 298), and he disputes the empire of genes of E. O. Wilson and Richard Dawkins with the help of Henri Atlan (p. 300).
El sonambulismo lo ilustran Catherine Lemaire, el Petrushka de Stravinski y un poema vertical de Roberto Juarroz (p. 315).For social influence he turns to La Boétie and his voluntary servitude (p. 304), and to Rivarol: in times of turmoil the hard thing is not doing one's duty, but knowing it (p. 308). The notion of the non-trivial machine, coined by von Foerster, organizes pp. 311–312. Sleepwalking is illustrated by Catherine Lemaire, Stravinsky's Petrushka and a vertical poem by Roberto Juarroz (p. 315).
Autonomía dependienteDependent autonomy
Morin no opone libertad y determinación. Morin does not set freedom against determination. A living being is autonomous because it depends on its milieu, from which it draws energy, organization and knowledge. The same holds for genes: what is inscribed in them is the experience of our ancestors, which gave us a brain able to choose. Multiple dependencies are conditions of autonomy, though they can also annihilate it.
Genes, milieu, culture, society, history and ideas possess us. Cultural imprinting fixes from childhood what is prescribed and what is forbidden; the State settles in as a Superego; accelerated history drags its actors beyond what they wanted; force-ideas make use of humans. But biological and cultural heritage fight each other, and in that breach autonomy opens up.
A trivial machine is one whose behavior can be predicted once its inputs are known. We are often like that: the same grooming, the same subway, the same timetable. But faced with a disturbance we improvise, and at decisive moments we can escape the trivial order: desert, flee, resist, fall in love. We carry within us a principle of uncertainty that is, at the same time, a principle of freedom.
A point walks asleep along a path already laid out; at moments it lights up, looks around and chooses a detour before dozing off again: we are sleepwalkers with flashes of wakefulness.
Donde se ve el sonámbuloWhere the sleepwalker shows
Cotidiano · el metro averiadoEveryday · the broken-down subway
Every morning we repeat the same rites: grooming, the subway at the same station, arriving at work at the expected hour. We look like trivial machines. But if we get up late, we skip breakfast; if the subway breaks down, we look for a taxi; if there is a traffic jam, we invent a route. Each improvised trick reveals, Morin says, a non-trivial machine.
Biológico · los genes que nos poseenBiological · the genes that possess us
For pan-geneticism genes are the masters and the individual their automaton. Morin replies that DNA isolated from the cell is nothing but a molecule: the gene depends on the cytoplasm as much as the cytoplasm depends on it. What rules in them is the memory of our lineage. We live by resurrecting our forebears within us.
Social · Dionisio RidruejoSocial · Dionisio Ridruejo
Dionisio Ridruejo, who had been a Falangist, begins his resistance to Franco's regime by handing out leaflets at the Madrid tram depots. Morin places him beside the recruit who deserts an unjust war, the prisoners who escape the camp and the women who rebel: every act of escape or resistance is non-trivial in nature.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es el libre albedríoIt is not free will
The spiritualist conception mythifies freedom by making it independent of physical, biological and social conditions. Morin acknowledges freedoms but rules out absolute free will, just as he acknowledges determinations but rules out absolute determinism. Freedom does not fall from the sky: it emerges from the dependencies that nourish it.
No es transgredir sin másIt is not simply transgressing
Freedom carries transgression within it, but a purely egocentric freedom, which ignores social rules and moral imperatives, becomes criminal. And whoever slips through the meshes of society, like the vagrant or the dissident, may gain personal freedom and lose, in exclusion, their civil liberties.
No es estar despierto del todoIt is not being fully awake
The total wakefulness that Siddhartha, the Buddha, sought could only lie beyond sleep: in nothingness. Morin proposes neither waking up completely nor falling fully asleep. He proposes being aware of our sleepwalking and our automatisms, resisting imprinting, paradigm and law, and seizing the flashes of lucidity.
Our consciousness is a flickering little flame that lets itself be fooled by false consciousness, but it is the pilot light our sleepwalking existence has at its disposal.Edgar Morin · El Método 5, p. 316Edgar Morin · Method 5, p. 316 (free translation)
Morin has just described us as automatons, sleepwalkers and possessed beings, inhabited by life, the species, culture and ideas, doomed to remain half awake. Here he rescues what still guides us: a fragile consciousness, which errs even about itself, but keeps alight the possibility of choosing.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin recalls that an overwhelming majority of humans, in history and today, have only been able to live in order to survive. His paths of freedom, which run through high social complexity, democracy and a rich culture, are also privileges distributed with enormous inequality. Talking about inner freedom without talking about these conditions would be, in his own terms, to mythify it.
Accelerated history confronts consciousness with contradictory injunctions. In June 1940 two patriotisms clashed, that of the legally elected marshal and that of the rebel general exiled in London, and so did two internationalisms. Sincere pacifists ended up collaborating with the Nazi war machine. Morin admits it is easy, thirty years later, to see clearly where so many went astray.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Recommendation algorithms and personalized advertising work like a tailor-made imprinting: they predict our behavior because they assume it is trivial and, in doing so, make it more trivial. Morin's distinction lets us read the debate on the attention economy as a dispute over how much room is left for strategy, deviation and unforeseen choice.
Debates on genetic determinism resurface with every promise to predict traits and behaviors from the genome. Morin's answer is still useful: the gene is at once burden and gift, limitation and possibility. What is specifically human is not a behavioral program, but the innate aptitude to perform non-innate behaviors.
