Identidad planetaria e identidad futuraPlanetary identity and future identity
The same globalization that conquers and standardizes carries in its wake another that emancipates and reconnects: the future is played out between both helices.
De dónde viene: de la gran diáspora a Porto AlegreWhere it comes from: from the great diaspora to Porto Alegre
The second begins in 1492 with Columbus and Vasco da Gama (p. 256), and he traces its humanist counter-helix to Bartolomé de las Casas, Montaigne and Montesquieu's Persian Letters (p. 259), and then to Victor Hugo and the socialist Internationals (p. 260).
For the planetary megamachine he draws on Christopher Lasch and his portrait of the new elite (p. 266). For the future he discusses Bill Joy's essay on a posthumanity without humans, Dan Simmons's Hyperion saga, The Matrix and a novel by Clifford Simak (p. 279), and closes with the fable of Forbidden Planet and Asimov's Foundations (pp. 291–292).
The first helix is conquest: violence, slavery, westernization and, today, the four-engine of science, technology, industry and profit. The second is born within the West itself from its universalist ideas: human rights, the right of peoples, democracy, solidarity. They are antagonistic and inseparable: emancipatory ideas grew as a counterpoint to domination and traveled through the same channels of trade and communication.
The infrastructure already exists: a transnational economy, a technosphere, the Internet as an artificial planetary neuro-cerebral system. Everything else is missing: bodies able to regulate the four-engine, a law of humanity, global commons such as water or information, a planetary civil society and, above all, awareness of a community of destiny. The problem is not technical.
Metamáquinas y metahumanosMetamachines and metahumans
Future identity is at stake on three interfering fronts: world-society, machines that become autonomous, and intervention in genes, brains and death. For each, Morin sketches a better future and a baleful one, without deciding. What is announced is a metamorphosis of the individual-society-species trinity, whose outcome may be an abortion, a monster or a new birth.
Two helices wrap around the Earth: a dark one, of conquest and the four-engine; a bright one, of rights and solidarity. They turn together, intertwine, and neither moves without the other.
Donde se ve el planetaWhere the planet shows
Cotidiano · el europeo holográmicoEveryday · the holographic European
A middle-class European wakes up to his Japanese radio, drinks tea from Ceylon or coffee from Latin America, wears cotton from Egypt or India, listens to Bach played by a Korean cellist. Like each point of a hologram, he carries the whole world within him. Meanwhile, many others live in a planetary circuit of misery.
The conquest brought maize, potatoes and cocoa to Europe, and horses and cereals to America. But bacilli and viruses traveled too: influenza and tuberculosis from Eurasia caused hecatombs in America, while syphilis leapt from America all the way to Shanghai. That is why Morin writes that the first unification of the globe was microbial.
Social · Davos y Porto AlegreSocial · Davos and Porto Alegre
In 2001 the Davos and Porto Alegre gatherings coincided. Morin sees there the two globalizations face to face: one tries to organize society on the basis of the economy; the other starts from the idea that the world is not a commodity. Missing, he says, is the conclusion: if it is not a commodity, it must be a common homeland.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es la globalización de 1989It is not the globalization of 1989
The words globalization and mondialisation conceal that the process began in 1492 and involves every dimension of human identity, not just markets. What is new after 1989 is the opening of the USSR and China to private capitalism, which made the market truly worldwide.
Homeland Earth does not ask us to give up nation or ethnicity. Morin rejects abstract cosmopolitanism and proposes an earthly one: every re-rooting is legitimate if it comes with the deeper re-rooting in terrestrial human identity, because all humans are children of life and of the Earth.
No es la omnipotencia de la menteIt is not the omnipotence of the mind
The mind manipulates atoms, genes and neurons, but understands less and less: it is the demiurge of the four-engine, not its pilot. Like the Krell of Forbidden Planet, who freed their monsters when they freed themselves from their bodies, it may destroy itself through excess of power. What we must seek is not its omnipotence, but its pertinence.
That is why we see ever more clearly that there are two globalizations in one: one mainly technical and economic, founded on profit, the other in which an awareness of belonging to an earthly homeland is taking shape and which prepares a planetary citizenship.Edgar Morin · El Método 5, p. 263Edgar Morin · Method 5, p. 263 (free translation)
Morin has just contrasted techno-economic globalization, institutionalized and driven by so-called single thought, with the other one, heir to very diverse emancipatory currents and hard to organize. Here he names them together: two in one, antagonistic and inseparable, and the planetary future will depend on their dialogic.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin does not idealize the second helix: it inherits scattered currents and risks breaking apart or falling into simplifying illusions. Nor does he demonize the first, which under that pressure seeks to regulate itself. And he admits that universalist culture parasitizes world trade and the media industry, which in turn parasitize it. Emancipation travels on the ruler's ships.
His own biography comes into play. In 1951 he announced amortality; in the 1970 reissue he declared it mythical; in 2001, with stem cells, he takes it up again as de-mortality. And the cosmopithecus he celebrated in 1958 now worries him: he wonders whether the superhuman being will have a heart. Admitting that euphoria turned into unease is part of the method, even if it brings no comfort.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
The debate on artificial intelligence repeats Morin's alternative almost term by term: precious collaborators to talk with, or intelligences that take control. Written in 2001, before large language models, the chapter raises the question now discussed in governments and labs: who pilots a technology that grows through positive feedback.
World-society remains unfinished. There are forums, climate agreements and international courts, but no body truly regulates the four-engine, and health and climate crises show at once the community of destiny and the lack of awareness of it. The question of global commons, such as water or information, remains open.
Will humanity manage to give birth to Humanity before the four-engine drags it away?
Which objects in your day come from other continents, and what do you know about those who make them?
In which of the two helices do you put your time, your work and your money?
Do you feel the Earth as a homeland, or does that idea seem abstract to you? Why?
Which technology do you use that makes you more powerful and, at the same time, less able to understand?
Which metamorphosis would you wish for humanity, and which one frightens you?
