La identidad históricaHistorical identity
Lo improbable, lo involuntario y la desviancia que se vuelve normaThe improbable, the unintended and the deviance that becomes the norm
History does not move forward like a majestic river: it moves by deviations that, if no one crushes them at birth, end up redirecting the course.
De dónde viene: de la guerra de conquista a la «nueva historia»Where it comes from: from the war of conquest to the «new history»
He draws on Gaston Bouthoul, founder of polemology, to show that war is endemic to history (p. 230), and on Régis Viguier to recall that since Assyria no year has been free of bloodshed (pp. 229–230).
Against the «new history», which favored determinism and continuity and saw the event as mere foam, Morin brings back the randomness that had already entered physics and biology (p. 232). He turns to Bateson to think of great transformations as morphogenesis (p. 238), to Walter Benjamin and Vasily Grossman for the double game of civilization and barbarism (p. 248), and he discusses Fukuyama's end of history (p. 251).
History is not just a flow of determinisms. The event, unexpected, improbable and new, causes its falls, its rapids and its changes of course. Morin defines probability as what seems most likely to a well-informed observer at a given time and place; that is why Marathon, Salamis or the resistance of Moscow in 1941 were improbable, and still decided the course.
Every innovation starts out as deviant: bipedalism, agriculture, the bourgeoisie, modern science, the prophets, Galileo, the young Einstein. It is almost always crushed at birth. If it survives, it creates a micro-milieu, weaves networks and incubates, sometimes for centuries; in a crisis it proliferates, becomes a tendency and ends up as the new norm, often a persecuting one in turn.
There are no laws of history, except one: every development disorganizes and degrades what came before it. Progress and regression, civilization and barbarism do not exclude each other, they contain each other. Add to this the ecology of action: once launched, every action enters a play of inter-retroactions that diverts it and may turn it against its author. History knows the success of the unintended.
A straight line moves on until a small, almost invisible deviation begins to grow; if nothing crushes it, it ends up dragging the whole line along: this is how a deviance becomes a tendency and then a norm.
That adolescence is an age with its own culture seems natural. Morin tells it as a silent revolution born of a deviation: it starts with the Romantic poetry of Shelley and Rimbaud, takes shape in 1950s cinema with James Dean and the young Marlon Brando, and asserts itself with rock and its rites.
In 1941 the Nazi army reached the gates of Moscow and was stopped by an early and harsh winter. Hitler had delayed the attack by a month to invade Yugoslavia, and Stalin, finally heeding his spy Sorge, brought fresh troops from Siberia. A climatic hazard, a political-military one and an informational one tipped history over.
Social · la alerta ecológicaSocial · the ecological alarm
The ecological alarm was born in 1968 and was ignored and contested; awareness of the danger threatening the biosphere remained marginal for two decades. Only then came a first worldwide awakening, embodied in the Rio (1992) and Kyoto (1997) conferences. Morin gives it as an example of a deviance that takes its time to become a tendency.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es una ley del progresoIt is not a law of progress
Morin abandons both Lamarckian progress, which would accumulate achievements, and any law of increasing complexification. Knowledge, books, crafts and experience are lost; torture, abolished in Europe in the nineteenth century, came back in the twentieth. Acquisitions are preserved, but only if we acknowledge their countless losses and regenerate them ceaselessly.
No es el teatro de los grandes hombresIt is not the theater of great men
Nor does he return to a history of heroes. He grants the role of strategists and inspired figures, from De Gaulle and Churchill to Moses, Buddha or Muhammad, but only in uncertain situations that open the way for them. And the same megalomaniac daring that leads to triumph often leads to catastrophe, as with Napoleon or Hitler.
No es una Razón en marchaIt is not Reason on the march
History is not guided by a Reason in action. It has its logics, determinations and rationalities, but also sound and fury. That is why Morin asks us to join Marx with Shakespeare: the Greek and Elizabethan tragedians showed that the tragedies of power are tragedies of human passion, unawareness and excess.
The main internal engine of history is that of a deviance, which develops at the same time as the regulation that holds it back is paralyzed or the force that represses it weakens.Edgar Morin · El Método 5, p. 237Edgar Morin · Method 5, p. 237 (free translation)
Morin has just listed the deviants who changed history, from Moses and Galileo to Lenin, Hitler or De Gaulle, and the innovations that were deviant too, from bipedalism to modern science. Here he states the general rule: historical becoming is born of a deviation that manages to escape its repression.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin puts Jesus, Galileo, Einstein, Lenin, Hitler and De Gaulle on the same list of deviants. Deviance is neither good nor bad: it is how the new enters the world. It is unsettling because it forces us to admit that the heresy we admire today and the sect we fear today are born the same way, and that protecting one makes room for the other.
His diagnosis of war offers no comfort either. War is homicidal madness, he writes, and yet a wise State accepts it to escape annihilation: at Marathon and Salamis Athens saved democracy and philosophy by accepting war. Moreover, conquests scatter seeds: conquered Greece conquered Rome, and the Ottomans left coffee and the croissant at the gates of Vienna.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
The question of improbable events lies at the heart of risk analysis, counterfactual history and studies of financial crises or pandemics. Morin anticipates a lesson many repeat today: models that merely extrapolate trends fail precisely at decisive moments, when a singular event or a marginal deviance changes the rules of the game.
The ecology of action aptly describes policies that produce the opposite of what they sought: reforms that hasten a collapse, sanctions that strengthen those they punish, campaigns that spread what they wanted to silence. Thinking of action as a wager rather than a program is today a requirement for governments, movements and organizations acting in highly interconnected settings.
