La identidad socialSocial identity
Del núcleo arcaico sin Estado al gran LeviatánFrom the stateless archaic core to the great Leviathan
Individuals produce the society that produces them; with the State, that wheel becomes a megamachine that protects, civilizes and subjugates all at once.
De dónde viene: de Hobbes y Mumford a la mente de dos cámarasWhere it comes from: from Hobbes and Mumford to the two-chambered mind
For the general interest he discusses Arrow's theorem and a remark by Adorno (p. 188); for the family, Freud, the Palo Alto school and Emmanuel Todd's family types (pp. 191–192).
The second chapter bears epigraphs by Hobbes, Ricoeur and Walter Benjamin (p. 197). Morin takes from Lewis Mumford the notion of the megamachine (pp. 198 and 206), from Julian Jaynes the two-chambered mind (pp. 187 and 200) and from Toynbee the religion of the nation-state (p. 200). He closes with Hobbes's Great Leviathan understood as a being of the third type (p. 223).
For tens of thousands of years there were stateless hunter-gatherer societies whose norms were so deeply internalized that coercion was almost useless. Culture is their organizing heritage: a cognitive and technical capital and a mythological and ritual one, the social equivalent of the genetic heritage. That core survives in every later society: bioclasses, sexual prohibitions, the fraternal myth.
Leviatán: el Estado como aparatoLeviathan: the State as apparatus
With historical societies the State arises, an apparatus of command and control that memorizes, calculates, decides and monopolizes violence. It does not only subjugate bodies: it subjects minds, installing its authority inside the subject like a Superego. It is at once barbaric and civilizing: it ends private vendettas and creates writing and arts, but the servitude of the masses pays for them.
Baja y alta complejidadLow and high complexity
Every historical society combines centrism, polycentrism and acentrism; hierarchy, polyarchy and anarchy; specialization and general skills. Low-complexity societies favor the center, rigid hierarchy and the program; high-complexity ones tolerate disorder, conflict and uncertainty, and allow the controlled to control their controllers. The 'good' society, Morin says, generates and regenerates high complexity.
Many individuals geared into a great wheel that moves them and that they move: the social megamachine never turns by itself, it depends on those who turn it.
Every day you earn your living for yourself and, in doing so, you are a cog in the economic and social machine. On Saturday you go dancing and have fun, but that dance also relaxes, eases tension and integrates for the benefit of society. In all leisure, Morin says, there is both escape and participation.
Ant and termite societies are not totalitarian: they have no command apparatus at all. Their collective being arises from interactions among individuals, with much agitation and wasted energy. They are beings of the third type, almost as integrated as an organism. Human societies became such beings by another route: culture and, later, the State.
Social · el Inca y la emboscadaSocial · the Inca and the ambush
Rigid, centralized organization decides quickly, but receives information slowly, smothers criticism from below and is extremely fragile. Morin gives an Andean example: it was enough to lure the sovereign Inca into an ambush to behead his gigantic empire. At the other extreme, the USSR only worked thanks to disobedience, cheating and clandestine arrangements.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es determinismo socialIt is not social determinism
The relation between individual and society is not a mold that leaves margins of freedom. It is hologrammatic, because society is in the individual who is in it; recursive, because each term produces the other; and dialogical, because it is at once complementary and antagonistic. Every society is both communal and rivalrous.
No es un contratoIt is not a contract
The social bond, Morin writes, is not the product of a mythical contract or of pure physical coercion. It is born of the trinitarian loop: society produces itself from biological reproduction, which in turn reproduces itself according to the social norm, with the incest taboo and exogamy as its foundations.
No es un sujetoIt is not a subject
The State occupies the sociocentric position and has superhuman powers, but it has no self-consciousness. It cannot say 'I'; at most, a real individual says 'I am the State'. Against Hegel, Morin holds that the State never becomes a true Subject: consciousness remains in individuals.
The megamachine is rational in its organization and its technology, but on the one hand it is the limited rationality of the artificial machine, and on the other the instrumental rationality serving demented enterprises of power. It supplies mad energies to human madness.Edgar Morin · El Método 5, p. 209Edgar Morin · Method 5, p. 209 (free translation)
Morin has just described the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century, which restored the single megamachine of ancient totalitarianism, and their final failure in the USSR. The sentence links social identity with the chapter on sapiens-demens: the most rational organization can become the best instrument of excess.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin does not leave democracies out of the shadow. Athens exploited its slaves; the England of habeas corpus and the France of the rights of man subjugated their colonies, and it was the great democracies that colonized the world at the end of the nineteenth century. He recalls Benjamin: every document of culture is also one of barbarism.
His tenth precept offers no comfort either: there is no stable social optimum. Abolishing crime entirely would require watching everyone and turning society into a prison machine. If we want freedoms, we must tolerate margins of disorder and the possibility of crime. High complexity lives, Morin says, at the temperature of its own destruction.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Morin warned that a neo-totalitarian State could not be ruled out, one that would use computer controls and genetic and brain manipulation to subject and infantilize individuals. Mass digital surveillance, facial recognition and behavior scoring make that hypothesis concrete, and the question of who controls the controllers returns to the center of democratic debate.
Far from being mere indiscipline, that spontaneous counter-organization keeps companies and bureaucracies alive. A work-to-rule strike, obeying every rule to the letter, is enough to paralyze them.
